The Deacon Ministry serves as spiritual assistants to the Pastor and supporters of the church body, demonstrating Christ-like service, compassion, and stewardship. The origin of the deacon ministry can be traced to the early church in Acts 6:1–7, when seven men were appointed to ensure the needs of the congregation were met so that the apostles could devote themselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word.
Deacons embody this same calling today—caring for the spiritual and practical needs of members, supporting the mission of the church, maintaining unity, and promoting order within the body of Christ.
The Apostle Paul describes the qualifications and character of a deacon in 1 Timothy 3:8–13, emphasizing dignity, integrity, spiritual maturity, and faithful service.
Responsibilities of the Deacon Ministry include:
-
Assisting the Pastor in spiritual leadership
-
Visiting the sick, shut-in, and bereaved families
-
Supporting communion services and baptism
-
Helping foster unity and care within the congregation
-
Encouraging discipleship and growth in the faith
-
Upholding order and support within worship
The ministry of a deacon reflects the heart of Jesus, who taught that true greatness is found in serving others (Matthew 23:11) and who came “not to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45). Through humble leadership and compassionate care, the Deacon Ministry promotes a healthy, spiritually growing church rooted in love.
